In the current situation, many of us are opting for a staycation rather than a trip abroad. We know that a long road trip is going to be exciting at first, but it can quickly wear off when we become agitated with every hour that passes. However, it doesn’t have to be all bad, here are our top tips for long distance driving this summer!
The first, and probably the most obvious tip for long distance driving is to plan ahead, because if you don’t, you’re going to stress out and potentially make the journey more difficult than it needs to be!
Plan ahead to figure out times for pit stops, and possibly even schedule in time to sleep (depending on how far or long you’re driving).
The next tip is to avoid driving whilst tired as it can be just as dangerous as driving while under the influence of alcohol. Your reaction time will be slowed down and the last thing anyone wants is to fall asleep at the wheel. If you know you’re going to be driving for a long period of time, prepare by getting a well-rested night’s sleep the night before!
Before you set off, you need to fill your tank up. The Government has recommended motorway services not to be located more than 28 miles apart, however you may find yourself on the roads without enough services. We would recommend filling up before you go, and then refilling when your tank is quarter of the way full.
As we mentioned above, services are not always available on UK roads so it is best to prepare and take water and snacks. It isn’t illegal to eat or drive while behind the wheel but by taking regular breaks along the way, you shouldn’t need to!
If you are going to be driving a long distance, you should take a break of at least 15 minutes every two hours. By planning ahead, you should familiarise yourself with where the service stations are located or where you could stop for quick rest/toilet break where needed.
Now, we don’t mean a game of i-Spy to pass the time. Make sure you have a good playlist on, an audiobook playing or even a podcast to help make driving more enjoyable (and to pass the time quicker). If you are going to be travelling with kids, make sure they have suitable activities to help pass the time and all devices are fully charged before setting off!
