What Does the MOT Check?

The Ministry of Transport test, otherwise known as the MOT test, was first introduced back in the 1960s. The test has been designed to check the safety, roadworthiness and emissions of vehicles on UK roads. It covers all vehicles from small motorcycles under 200cc to lorries. MOT tests ensure no vehicles on the road have potentially dangerous faults putting both the driver and other road users at risk.

MOT Checklist

Back in 2018, the Government introduced new measures for the MOT tests making them stricter and the tests are not getting any easier. The MOT test includes a range of checks on various parts of your car to make sure they meet the minimum standards laid out by the Driving and Vehicle Standards Authority.

The checks include everything from ensuring the Vehicle Identification Number is present to a legible registration/number plate being secure and also in the correct format. The MOT test will also check the following:

1. Steering

2. Suspension

3. Horn

4. Windscreen

5. Lights

6. Wiper Blades

7. Washer fluid

8. Seat belts

9. Fuel system

10. Exhaust emissions

11. Body work

12. Mirrors

13. Doors

14. Wheels and tyres

15. Brakes

Before your car goes up for the MOT test, you can check over these parts to ensure everything is working as expected. Many motorists fail the MOT test on common faults such as light bulbs being blown or tyres not being the required legal limit.
