A car’s radiator helps keep the engine cool. If there’s a leak, coolant will be lost. Coolant is used to remove heat from the engine by transferring heat through a series of coils. The cool air then flows back into the engine, preventing the engine from overheating. It’s best to avoid driving your car if you have a coolant leak because an overheating engine is an unsafe engine!
Coolant can be green, pink or orange so if you notice any of these fluids underneath your vehicle, you could have a leaking radiator.
Modern cars will now have a dashboard light indicating low coolant levels. Or you will notice a rise in your car’s temperature gauge; this can mean a radiator leak. These two signs can mean your car may overheat soon.
A radiator leak is guaranteed to cause your vehicle to constantly overheat. If you notice the temperature gauge rising, turn on the heater as high as it can go. This will help to take some load off the engine. If the gauge does not budge, you need to pull over. Never open the radiator cap and try to take care of the problem yourself, as this can cause hot liquid to spray in your face. Wait until a mechanic can check this for you!
Radiator leaks can be repaired by a professional mechanic. The area can be sealed, or the radiator may need to be completely replaced. The best thing to do is avoid driving long distances with a coolant leak as this can cause further damage to the engine. The last thing you want is to have a more expensive trip to the mechanic.
