IN A CAR SERVICE?
Baffled by your car's service schedules and what work is supposed to be done when?
So you know what to expect, here is an interim and major car service checklist. Including four separate categories, such as under-bonnet checks and internal checks, we explain exactly everything you can expect to be tested across both services, giving you the full scope of your options.
Checks included in interim service:
- Timing belt replacement interval(miles/years)
- For damage to bodywork, lamps & trims
- Oil level
- Fit protective covers
- Operation of interior and exterior lights
- Operation of ABS and airbag warning lights (if applicable)
- Windscreen washers and wipers
- Horn
- Apply proprietary treatments to remove internal contamination
Additional checks included in major service:
- Vehicle history
- Operation of suspension dampers
- Condition and operation of all seat belts
- Lubricate all door hinges, locks and bonnet catches
- Air conditioning operation including diagnosis of bad odours
- Fuel cap
Checks included in interim service:
- Cooling system and fan operation
- Record anti-freeze concentrationand protection
- Record brake fluid condition
- Power steering operation and fluid condition
- Top-up all under-bonnet fluid levels
Additional checks included in major service:
- Engine breather system
- Replace air filter
- Vacuum pipes
- Replace spark plugs
- Throttle body & clean if required
- Replace fuel filter
- Battery level & lubricate terminals
- Replace pollen filter
- All auxiliary drive belts (not timing belt)
Checks included in interim service:
- Change oil and filter, and fit new sump plug washer
- Fuel lines and brake pipes
- Condition & security of exhaust system
- All steering & suspension joints, mounts and gaiters
- Report on condition/tread/pressure/size of all four tyres, plus spare
- All wheel bearings for excessive 'play' and noise-adjust as needed
- CV gaiters & joints for wear and splits
- Operation & condition of front brakes
- Carry out brake report (front wheels, interim & full services; rear wheels, full service only)
Additional checks included in major service:
- Top up axle and transfer box oil levels
- Grease all greasing points
- Top up gearbox oil level
- Clutch cable and cylinder
- Operation & condition of rear brakes, including handbrake
Checks included in interim service:
- Refill engine using specified grade oil
- Adjust torque of wheel nuts/studs
Checks included in interim service:
- Road-test vehicle and report any findings
- Re-check engine oil level
- Ensure all upholstery, gear lever, steering wheel etc are clean
- Stamp service book
Additional checks included in major service:
- Carry out diagnostic
- Reset service interval indicator
