If your answer was, “I sit with the clutch down, foot gently on the break and the car in first gear ready to move off”, don’t worry, you are not alone! This is putting unnecessary strain on your clutch. It is better to sit with the car in neutral and the handbrake on to keep the car stationary, saving both the brakes and clutch from straining.
Riding the clutch is a very common mistake we all make, this is when we only have the clutch pedal partially pressed down. In doing this, its pushing pressure against the clutch plate but not engaging completely, thus creating more friction and wearing it out that bit faster.
We all do it sometimes but don’t change gear more times than necessary. As a driver, always think ahead about what obstacles you will meet, this will help in maintaining a constant speed and not changing gear every few minutes. It’s important to remember that while trying to preserve the lifespan of your clutch, not to wear out the brakes instead. When slowing down, don’t be changing through the gears, as this will put pressure on the brakes and inevitably wear them out faster.
