How to Avoid Wearing Out Your Clutch

Did you know that certain driving habits you may have can wear out certain parts of your car quicker than necessary? It is natural that over time, car parts will suffer wear and tear, but changing some of those driving habits you may have will increase their longevity.

Your clutch is subjected to constant friction, so it shouldn’t surprise you that it will eventually wear out. It could last only 10,000 miles and need or a replacement, or it could last up to 150,000, this depends entirely on how the car is driven. A clutch repair can be pricey, so think carefully about how you’re treating it as it will help keep that money in your pocket.

Here are our 3 top tips on how you can improve the lifespan of your clutch.

1. At the traffic lights? Sit in neutral

When you’re patiently waiting on that traffic light to go from red to green, what do you tend to do while you wait? If your answer was, “I sit with the clutch down, foot gently on the break and the car in first gear ready to move off”, don’t worry, you are not alone! This is putting unnecessary strain on your clutch. It is better to sit with the car in neutral and the handbrake on to keep the car stationary, saving both the brakes and clutch from straining.

2. Don’t ride your clutch!

Riding the clutch is a very common mistake we all make, this is when we only have the clutch pedal partially pressed down. In doing this, its pushing pressure against the clutch plate but not engaging completely, thus creating more friction and wearing it out that bit faster.

3. Be decisive about your gear changes

We all do it sometimes but don’t change gear more times than necessary. As a driver, always think ahead about what obstacles you will meet, this will help in maintaining a constant speed and not changing gear every few minutes. It’s important to remember that while trying to preserve the lifespan of your clutch, not to wear out the brakes instead. When slowing down, don’t be changing through the gears, as this will put pressure on the brakes and inevitably wear them out faster.
