The ever-fluctuating prices of fuel is a serious cause for frustration among drivers and we are always trying to find ways to save money on the roads. When it comes to cutting down our fuel costs, one of the most obvious choices many of us make is to find a filling station with the cheapest petrol and diesel. But are there ways that can save us fuel when driving?
Speed is arguably one of the most influential factors affecting fuel consumption, however there are a number of other ways you can change your driving habits that will have a significant impact on how many times you visit a filling station.
Here are our tips on how to save fuel when driving.
How to drive more efficiently
Slowing down Like we said, speed is one of the most influential factors affecting fuel consumption. According to the AA, dropping from 80 to 70 mph could save you up to 25% in fuel, and if you’re on a smaller road, going from 70 to 60 mph, you could save another 10%.
Maintain your vehicle
By maintaining your vehicle regularly and ensuring you service your car at regular intervals will improve the efficiency of your vehicle and improve fuel consumption.
Look after your tyres
Simple things like keeping your tyres inflated to the correct pressure as indicated in your owner’s manual can improve your fuel economy.
Reduce weight
Lighter cars will use less fuel, so if you don’t need to be driving around with unnecessary items in your boot just take them out, and unless you’re going on a long journey, consider running your fuel tank half full.
Air con vs Windows down
By using your air conditioning all the time, you will increase fuel consumption, especially when driving at low speeds. On hot days, consider using the aircon for high speed driving only such as when you’re on the motorway, and put down the windows when driving around towns or cities.
Walk or cycle
This is one of the most obvious tips for saving fuel, but for short journeys why not walk or cycle instead of using your car?
