We all know how miserable British weather is, as we seem to get our fair share of rainfall! This is why it’s important to be prepared to drive in wet road conditions as safely as possible. We’ve pulled together some of the best tips to consider before heading out in your car on a damp day.
Preparing to drive in the rain
● Think about your alternative routes - always try to use main roads where possible as they are less likely to be flooded but have an alternative route in mind in the event of accidents or closures.
● Check your tyres - You should regularly check that your tyres are the legal minimum of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of each tyre around it’s entire circumference, as this will ensure you obtain sufficient grip on the roads. If the weather is particularly wet, as it normally is in the winter months, you want to have the recommended 3mm for extra grip.
● Check your windscreen wipers - Ensure you can clearly see and that your front and rear windscreen wipers are working correctly. If they squeak or leave streaks, this is a sign they need replacing.
● Have a full tank of fuel - When driving in the rain, you will reduce your fuel economy due to using your lights, heater and wipers more than usual. Traffic may also be slower meaning you’ll use more fuel than usual, which is why it’s best to have plenty of fuel in the tank when driving in these conditions!
● Before setting off check your lights - As we mentioned above, you’re going to need to use your lights more than usual when driving in wet conditions, so ensure your headlights, taillights, sidelights, brake lights and indicators are working.
Should I drive through deep water?
If you’re wanting to pass through water that looks to be more than ankle-deep, don’t drive as this will result in major damage to your vehicle.
What if I break down in the rain?
Wet weather causes more breakdowns as damp conditions increase potential issues with electrics and engines. If you find yourself in a position where your car has broken down in the wet weather, pull over to a safe place and turn on your hazard lights. Wait for help to arrive, if your car has cut out after going through deep water do not restart it as you could damage your engine. Do not open the bonnet as engine electrics soaked in rain will make it more difficult to restart.
