Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, many MOT centres have closed, and tests have been delayed. Thankfully, we are here to clear everything up and give you more clarity on what to do if your MOT has expired.
If you have a vehicle that was due its annual MOT test on or before 29 March 2020, you must book a MOT as usual unless either:
·You or someone you live with is experiencing coronavirus symptoms
·Due to health conditions, you have been advised to stay at home.
You must stay at home to self-isolate if either of these situations apply, do not take your vehicle for its MOT.
You need to book your MOT test if you’re not self-isolating or staying at home due to health conditions. MOT centres and garages can stay open for you to do this. However, you should only get your vehicle’s MOT done if you need to use it:
·To shop for basic necessities and medicine.
·For any medical need.
·To travel to and from work where it is not possible to work from home.
Instead of getting a paper copy of your MOT certificate, you can download a copy by checking your vehicle’s MOT history after the test to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The rules are different if your MOT has expired after 30 March 2020. To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, MOT expiry dates are being extended by 6 months.
Your MOT certificate will only be extended by 6 months if it was due to expire on or after 30 March 2020 and your vehicle is a:
·Car
·Motorcycle
·Light van
·Other light vehicle
Your vehicle’s MOT expiry date will be automatically extended by 6 months if its eligible, this will be done around 7 days before the expiry date.
This means that your vehicle will still have a valid MOT certificate for an extra 6 months, you can still tax your vehicle and insurance will still be valid. Your vehicle’s record will also be updated for the police to see you still have a valid MOT.
