When you’re taking your car for a service, it’s not like taking your car for an MOT and that’s because you can’t fail a service. As a matter of fact, the garage or mechanic will be able to identify any potential failure points which you can then correct before your MOT test and this is the reason why many drivers across the UK will book both their MOT and service together.
There are a few things you will need to bring with you to your servicing appointment and we will cover them in this article.
What to expect from a car service?
There are different levels of car servicing and depending on which level is offered by your local garage or mechanic, they will check the inside and outside of your car to make sure it’s running as it should. They will also check for wear and tear on parts and perform important chances for oil and filters.
The amount of time your service takes will also depend on the servicing level your garage offers and if your service identifies any issues, then additional time will be required.
Why do I need to service my car?
You could own a car for ten years and never service it, only putting it through the MOT and dealing with any repairs or replacements that are needed for the vehicle to pass. By having your car serviced regularly you can lower the chances of your car breaking down and will keep it in good condition should you decide to sell your car down the line.
What do I need to take to my service?
Service book As part of your service, your car goes through dozens of check to ensure it’s safe and roadworthy. Your service technician or mechanic will need to know when you last had certain items replaced such as oil, filters or spark plugs. This information can be found in the service book so it’s important to bring this with you so they can assess your car. Once the service is complete, you will receive a stamp in your service book.
Alloy wheel or locking nuts
Alloy wheels can be costly which is why many vehicle manufacturers now fit them with locking nuts to protect you from theft. When your car is being serviced, your technicians will inspect your wheels and need to remove them to inspect your steering and suspension systems so bring the locking nuts with you.
An empty boot
Your service team will need to inspect the condition of your tread depth and as well as the tread of your spare tyre which is normally found in the boot.
