Do I Need a MOT to Tax My Vehicle?

Do I Need a MOT to Tax My Vehicle?

Vehicle Exercise Duty, also known as vehicle, car or road tax must be paid on most vehicles registered in the UK, and any motorist caught driving without it could find themselves with a fine up to £1,000!

Back in 2014, tax discs were scrapped and due to this, the number of untaxed vehicles has trebled since then. Do not fall foul of the law by driving a car that is untaxed.

Is it always illegal to drive a car without tax?

In the UK, it’s an offence to drive a vehicle on a public road without road tax, but there are a few exceptions to this rule.

If you have pre-booked a MOT test and are taking your car there, you can drive your vehicle on a road without it being tax. The law does not state how far you can travel, but if you stop off at the shops along the way or cover an unreasonably long distance it could be deemed that you are using the vehicle for other purposes and the exemption will no longer apply.

Disabled drivers may be exempt from paying vehicle tax, while certain vehicles such as electric cars may be excuse. However, it’s worth noting that you do still have to apply for road tax, even if you don’t need to pay it. Head over to www.gov.uk for more information regarding road tax.

Do I need MOT to insure my car?

Taking your car for its annual MOT test can feel like a chore, but once you’ve paid that and your vehicle has passed, it’s something you don’t have to worry about for another year.

Without a current MOT, your car insurance can become invalid. Not having a valid MOT certificate is illegal under Section 47 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 and you run the risk of facing a £1000 fine and a charge of six to eight penalty points on your licence without one.

What do I need to MOT my car?

    ·Vehicle registration document

    ·Appointment letter

·Any current certificate or notice of refusal for all cars, motorcycles, light goods vehicles and heavy goods vehicles.

A lot of the necessary documentation can now be accessed online by the test centre; however, it is important to bring the required documentation just in case. Check the status of your MOT by clicking here - https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-status
